What is a BCBA?

While there are many individuals and companies that claim to practice ABA therapy, not all of these individuals/businesses are qualified to provide Applied Behavior Analysis therapy services. Why? It all boils down to the right training and qualifications.

ABA therapy should alway, without exception, be facilitated by or under the watchful eye of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, or BCBA.

Certified under the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), BCBAs have a graduate level of certification and are qualified to practice independently. BCBAs are also qualified to supervise the work of Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBAs) who have an undergraduate level of certification.

In addition to their Master’s level of education, BCBAs are required to complete specific courses and 1,500 hours of supervised experience with the guidance of an approved supervisor. It is through this education and experience that BCBAs are able to receive their certification and gain the competency needed to practice on their own.

Board Certified Behavior Analysts are also required to stay current on the latest trends and research developments in ABA therapy by logging continued education credits. This keeps behavior analysts up-to-date on the best practices when delivering innovative ABA therapy solutions.

While other non-certified professionals may be compassionate and kind, Board Certified Behavior Analysts are truly the only qualified individuals that have the specific skills, education, and knowledge needed to facilitate ABA therapy.
